Daily Practice

On a very basic level, The One Day Way is essentially a weight loss book. But actually say it's a lot more than that.

Hobbs asks the reader to think about diet and exercise in a different way - taking it one day at a time according to Hobbs will ensure success in losing those extra pounds. And with this process, you're also 'exercising' the mind and spirit.

The book systematically takes the 'dieter' through the vital steps in changing their way of thinking and how not to lose faith in achieving their goal. Hobbs talks of faith but insists that faith in God is not a necessary factor in losing weight, but it helped her, especially those times when she didn't think she could continue and meet her goal. Belief in yourself and your faith in attaining your weight loss and changing your life for the better is what's important.

Throughout the book, Hobbs describes her own battle with weight and that despite being a working mother of 4 children, she lost over 300lbs. And taking it one day at a time is key. There are other 'inspirational' stories as well as a diet plan and key exercises.

I found this book to be a very easy to follow and certainly motivating. The diet itself is like most diets that I've seen before, reduce the calories and increase the exercise and this will enable weight loss. The main difference is how you approach what you eat and how often you exercise. For example, Monday you ate everything healthy, exercised for 30mins. Great. Tuesday you ate a healthy range of food but then a friend popped over and you both shared a bowl of ice-cream. Most dieters at this point would say "oh Lord, I've failed, what's the point can't stick to a diet for more than one day!" Hobbs says... who cares if you had the ice-cream. That was Tuesday. Wednesday lets see if you can go without the ice-cream even if your friend is going to come over again. And that's the point...don't think about what you ate or how much you exercised the day before, or even what you're going to do the next day...it doesn't matter. Focus on today.

And it's not a bad attitude to have about life in general. Too many people spend time focusing on what happened or what will happen and forget to live in the now.

It's a good book to get inspired if you need to lose a lot or just a little. Hobbs has an easy going manner and it comes across as that in this book. At times it seems a little repetitive but I think its about getting the message home - change your attitude about dieting - in fact don't say the word 'diet'! (Her previous book is in fact entitled Never Say Diet).
